2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke Diesel Comes At A Premium

Autoblog calls Ford’s latest entry into the heavy-duty diesel pickup segment a “peach” after test driving the new 2018 F-150 Power Stroke Diesel.

When you think of a diesel powered pickup, what comes to mind is a large-displacement engine that’s both noisy and powerful. In this case, only one of those preconceptions apply when it comes the diesel-powered F-150.

Featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, it is less than half of the F-Series Super Duty’s displacement. Built in the UK, the diesel V6 delivers 250 horsepower and an impressive 440 pound-feet of torque to its wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The powertrain combination returns a claimed fuel economy rating of rating of 22 mpg city, 30 highway and 25. Impressive, but that’s if you decide to go with the two-wheel drive version. Those who opt for four-wheel drive will see the numbers drop to 20 city, 25 highway and 22 combined.

Unlike what you’d expect from a diesel pickup, the diesel-powered F-150’s engine and transmission is exceptionally quiet. It’s a “far cry from heavy-duty diesel trucks that your mind may conjure up when you think of oil-burning pickups.” If one didn’t know it was diesel powered, you may mistake it for a petrol burning pickup.

The one drawback is just how expensive the 2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel is compared to something like the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, which goes for $4,000 less.

That's the tradeoff when it comes to the diesel F-150 and that's a hurdle some buyers may not be willing to jump over, especially when the slightly cheaper 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the diesel model.

Currently own the 3.5 liter EcoBoost

Got to tell you I am really looking forward to the F-150 Diesel....Pull a 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer all winter long and have to tell you that even though stats may show more horse power and greater torque I can tell you that pulling this trailer at 75-80 miles an hour sucks with the ecoboost based on engine noise. Not a fan of running at 3000 plus RPMs....expecting much better performance out of the diesel for cruising the interstate.....
Not only that but my fuel economy is consistently 14-17 MPG for normal everyday driving. NO WHERE close to whats listed on the sticker......
