I’d like to hear from other forum members how many miles they have on their truck and what specs, options, package your running. Is there anything you’d go back and change if you could do it over again?
2018 Platinum with almost every option, 5700 miles on it and the only thing I would have added are the tow mirrors. Other than that really happy with the truck so far!
2018 Platinum 4x4, 3.55, and 6.5 box purchased in May. Very happy with the truck as the mileage and comfort is good. The discounts on the 2018’s made the payment a little easier to swallow. I average around 23.5-24 mpg.
I just added the titan 48 gallon tank. Next looking to add Forscan and need to do my homework on it before I make the leap. I am sure the board will be very helpful.

If I did my truck over again I would have had LINE-X do my spray in bed liner instead of the dealership. I also would have taken off the P rated tires right away and replaced with LT rated tires, instead of waiting for the inevitable flat tire off roading in Ontario with P rated tires. Sort of a joke to label the truck FX4 Off Road with skid plates and have P rated tires--FX4 should come standard with LT rated tires.
The perimeter alarm is my big issue! Seems like a great system but I usually travel with my dogs and if I lock the truck without going into settings EVERY SINGLE TIME as soon as I get into a store or restaurant the Fordpass app goes off. Why in the world can I not set perimeter as default instead of all alarms?
2019 Lariat 4x4 5'5" bed, every bell and whistle except tow mirrors.(wish it had them), and moonroof(could care less it has that). Around 1200 miles, getting 25.8 average on first official fuel run after the dealer tank.. Feels like such an upgrade from my 2016 Lariat 2.7L 20.1 mpg average truck.
2018 here, similarly optioned with 6.5 bed. Wish I had opted for tow mirrors too. I am going to check into ordering and installing them myself. Love the truck! I am not getting the mileage most are reporting, but I am very happy with it.
I have a 2018 lariat Fx4 pearl white with a 6” tough country Lift and black scorpion off-road wheels -18 offset with 33-12.50-20 tires average around 20-23 mpg if I could change anything I would not get the moon roof
I've got an '18 King Ranch, White Gold over Stone Gray. Leveled on Icon Adjustables, and riding on 10 ply At/x Grabbers and Fuel wheels. It's got all the options, even the huge moonroof, that we only open to show people how big it is.
2019 Lariat, 502a package, supercrew, 4x4, 3.31 rear end, wheel well liners, front and rear mud flaps, sunroof.
I keep the cover on the sunroof closed all summer to keep the heat out but leave it open all winter to let the sunlight in. I live in SW Ontario and I like to let the sunlight in when its parked outside in the winter, then you can jump in a warm truck when its below freezing out.
800 miles so far running an average of 30mpg, I do 90% highway driving.
I came from a 2016 lariat 2.7 that averaged 22mpg.
Are y’all calculating the mpg yourself or looking at the system to calculate? I ask since the system is telling me around 21.5 in the day to day drive and I was super disappointed but when I ran the miles by how much I put in my tank during the full up I am pulling closer to 25.5. Which I am pleased with considering my ‘06 f150 was barely getting 17 mpg on the best of days.
I have not tried this myself yet, as my truck seems to be within 0.5 mpg of actual (At least when I am running summer diesel. On winter blend diesel I think the LOM (Lie-O-Meter) is off more.).
Before attempting the instructions in the above link, I would recommend tracking your calculations to display over several tanks. I would also fill up at the exact same fuel station and exact same pump number with the truck in the near exact position and fill up like The Fast Lane Truck guys do (wait until pump clicks off, wait 30 seconds, then fill again until it clicks off). Being consistent in approach will yield the most accurate hand calculated number to go in and adjust the LOM.
If anyone does try to re-program their truck with the instructions in the above link, please post your experience in doing so for the rest of us to learn from--thanks!
First month in my 2018 King Ranch with all the options and it has been awesome! Still pumped on the deal I got on last years model! 1300 miles on the car and zero regrets although I'm with those that wish they had the tow mirrors. This is my first diesel and learning about the engine and how it wants to operate takes a little studying. So far I've just done a little FORscaning primarily to see DPF% and threw some mudflaps, bed cover and liner on. The typical new truck additions but don't plan on much more. MPG I'm around 24 or so in mixed driving.
Also first post .. Hi! Was pumped to find this nice niche group of people!!
@Kingford welcome to the forum! You've found the right place to learn more about the 3.0 and how it operates. The DPF regens are what is most challenging to master coming from a gasser, based on my personal experience. Once you master that, or at least get a good handle of understanding with it, the truck is awesome!
Thanks @kdjasper! I'm comforted to know that Ford seems to intend on folks just going about their daily life blissfully ignorant in this truck without ever thinking about what happens to their exhaust. At the same time though, the big reason I got the 3.0 was fuel economy (without sacrificing the performance I care about) and I think understanding the regens will help maximize that in the mixed driving I do. I'll be doing the OCR in FORscan at some point but I just got the DPF% up there and want to monitor it for a bit first. The OCR is just the "auto regen" feature you can enable in FORscan, right?
Like @TexAg2010 mentioned (also, go Aggies!!), the MPG adjustment is a great trick. Haven't done it yet on this new truck but coming from a 2017 XLT 3.5 NA, that thing was always off by the typical 1-1.2 MPGs and that fix worked a treat.
FWIW, that XLT 3.5NA is what led me to my current truck. Going back to the reason for the thread, that was my first truck I could get over 20 MPGs in, better than my little old Tacoma! That 3.5NA is a great engine, I actually prefer it over my Dad's ecoboost where the MPGs are like 3-4 better non-boosted and I'd dare say reliability will be too. That was a great all-round truck. Insane value for money compared to what everyone here (including me) paid for their 3.0 truck. However, as similar as that truck was to my new 3.0, I mean it drove similarly, my butt in the seat felt the same, fills the same needs, even looked pretty similar in the driveway .. the trucks were so different. Everything I touch inside my King Ranch is better and I literally have a hard time finding a single piece that's the same. The technology makes a huge difference - I hate to admit I park the thing better with the 360 camera. The 3.0 won't wake anyone up at a stoplight but the effortless surge on the highway will surprise you. No drama with this engine unlike any high revving gasser and the 10 speed trans is a work of art compared to that old 6 and its shift points that were never quite right, no matter what mode you were in. Now that I think of it, the only downside of my new truck compared to my old is no more bench seat. I still grab for the column shifter and miss having my lady next to me .. or better yet my dog, lol.
Probably best to read through the whole thread start to finish and make some notes as to which post #'s provided the valuable info to assist you in setting this up.
Hey guys, just checking in for more current updates from 3.0 owners. How many miles do you have on your trucks and any mechanical issues to speak of? I’d be curious to know your average mpg and gear ratio too. I’m holding out until after the first of the year but hope I can pull the trigger in early 2020.
Can anyone comment the fuel mileage difference between the 3:31 gears and 3:55 as far as mileage goes? How much of an increase or decrease between the two? And how much of a difference would the gears make pulling a small 18-19’ travel trailer?
@ThreeO4Me - I have only owned the 3.31 Electronic gears, as I have ordered the FX4 package on my 2010 and 2015 F150 V8 and again on my 2018 F150 PS 3.0L V6 Diesel, so I cannot answer your questions.
While I understand your yearning to learn as much as possible before pulling the trigger on your purchase, your question is somewhat a loaded question, as the only person who could realistically answer this question is a dealer who has put enough demo miles on each ratio or an owner who has owned both 3.31 and 3.55 gears (read 2 different vehicles) in the last 15 months = I'm not sure any of us here can afford that.
If you are hung up on axles, I would review the Axle Availability chart on Page 28 of the 2019 Ford F-150 Order Guide to find that there are only three (3) axle options available for the F150 PS 3.0L V6 Diesel in only two (2) different ratios: 3.31 vs 3.55 (See screen cap below)
Larger ratio = gears spin slower for same engine RPM and transmission gear = better gas economy
=> Based on the averages that @Meisterics and I (both Platinums) posted above to your initial question, the 3.31 gears are costing me ~1 MPH is both city and highway driving
=> There are other factors involved in MPG such as: 2WD vs AWD vs 4WD, Active AWD (front axles always spinning) on Lariat and above trim levels, weight/payload, etc
Multiple owners have chimed in on other threads that they are towing small trailers with both axle ratios w/o any issues.
I could not be happier with my 2019 lariat 4x4, Diesel. I traded in a 2016 Ram 1500 diesel. I never had no trouble with the Ram, but I seen in the ram websites that it was a night mare for many people. The worry of it breaking down on a long trip was always on my mind. I will be taking my first long distant trip, the end of November. 715 miles door to door, I am having my 40 gal tank installed this week so my only stops will be the rest stops on I95 and I81. I have traveled about 950 miles, some Hi-way and most local, and it is averaging 23 miles per gallon since I bought the truck. all I can say right now is I love it.
So far for me, and I can only speak for myself, it has been one pleasurable ride, withabsolutely no worry, that the engine will blow up on the side of the road on theinterstate. Plus it is one good looking truck!

I would absolutely agree that the truck is really eye catching. I think the longevity and reliability of the powertrain in my biggest concern if I’m being honest. I’ve only had one other f150 and I drove the crap out of it and it held up as long as it could and ultimately threw a rod.
I just got back from a 432 mile trip (one way) in the mountains and very pleased with the mileage 32.8 at 70 mph and I average 24.8 to 26 around my home.
Wow, that is great MPG, I will be going on my long trip soon into the Pennsylvania Mts.I hope I get that kind of MPG . I am averaging 24.4 around home.
2019 platinum 4x4 extended wheel base 61/2 bed platinum white with Marcela interior sunroof off road package trailer package ford sprayed in bed linear back flip aluminum bed cover safety package . love my truck would not change a thing had a problem with my sunroof would not close ford fixed it I have ten thousand miles on the truck love the all wheel drive feature being in Florida it rains all the time so love it also love the seat massage works better then I thought on long trips .there are so many cool features on this truck like the automatic front camera lens cleaner, auto high beams , side vehicle detection works so good , comfort of the seats room in back , being able to select driving conditions eco wet off road normal and sport and so on still learning all the cool stuff.
I have a 2018 Lariat with the 502a options, which replaced a 2014 with the 3.5 Ecoboost. This is my fourth ford pickup truck, and there is nothing I would really change.
I take frequent trips to Cape Cod from the Boston area, about 90 miles each way. I get about 33mpg on this trip, which is much better than I expected (better than our volvo!). Around town, it is about 23.5, but now with the winter fuel I have been losing about 2 to 3 mpg.
My favorite features: The bed light, heated steering wheel, and with winter here I will love the automatic 4 wheel drive and locking axle like I did in my last truck. If you asked my kids, they would say they love all the plugs and charging ports that are available. My dog likes the flip up back seats, and the fact that there isn't a huge subwoofer under the rear passenger side seat.
Tomorrow I am getting the block heater replaced, so I hope that fixes the one real issue I have had with the truck where my GFCI trips as soon as I plug the truck in.
