Fuel water separator

Has anyone had to drain any water from the separator? I'm approaching 4k miles and haven't had to yet. I go to stations that have a lot of diesel truck activity to try and reduce the possibility of getting contaminated fuel but I'm wondering if this is something that should be done periodically or should you just wait until the indicator comes on.

It is easy to do so I am thinking it could be a part of the oil change procedure.

I never once had to drain the water separator on either of my prior duramaxes(combined 275,000 miles) I haven’t looked too much into the filtration system on the new 3.0 but as long as you get good fuel should be fine just swapping your fuel filter every 10k or so. I personally see no point in draining every oil change if the sensor doesn’t trigger a code/light you don’t have any water in your fuel filter.

Ditto. You will only have to drain if you get bad fuel, other wise you will just be pouring good diesel out.

Again all that would be doing is draining out good fuel. I thought the same way, until i figured out all I was doing is draining out good fuel.

Odd, it wasn't loading the comments from you and TxBriley until just now. I guess I'll hold off on doing this then. Yeah, I've been hearing that as long as you get good fuel, you probably don't need to worry about it.

Yessir shouldn’t need to worry about draining unless the light comes on! Which hopefully you ain’t gotta worry about!

In my past experience with Ford diesels - I never had an issue with water in the fuel. I did drain the lower filter/separator each oil change. Yes i wasted some diesel, but I figured that it was "piece of mind "

On the farm I have diesel tractors w/several thousand hours and other than filter changes- I don't drain the separator .
