BD Exhaust Brake

I have a brand new never installed 6.0 PS BD exhaust brake kit that I have been hauling around for the better part of a decade, since I am installing a delete pipe soon I am mulling around the idea of installing the BD kit in the 3.0L

My only concern is if the engine/turbo configuration is compatible with 55-60 psi of exhaust back pressure with a VGT, if you know and or have any experience, please share your input.

I am gonna email them today.

Quick Response.. Hi there Jonathan, Matt from BC Diesel here.

So to answer your question in the simplest way, at this time there are no plans set in motion regarding an exhaust brake for the 3.0 powerstroke truck. Now with that being said, something I would recommend is possibly contacting a custom tuner to see if they can build a tune that will utilize the VGT as an exhaust brake.

seeing as BC Diesel is a dealer for Proven I emailed them via my EZ Link App

asked about developing a Rocky Mountain tow tune with VGT brake actuated by the Auto Start button maybe paired with more precise shifts and aggressive grade shifting maybe something tuned for maximum low end torque, maybe around 40hp

yea, he said the issue is over-speeding the turbo.

i am not sure how much back pressure it can create before the overspeed event. I hope we may be able to do some testing.. he has asked me to submit a ticket.

I think an emission off tune that focuses on maximum torque delivery down low with focus on heat control when high altitude towing near maximum load... That would be a big hit with a lot of folks.. especially if he could incorporate low pressure VGT exhaust brake into a more aggressive grade shifting strategy in Tow/Haul with higher converter lockup pressure.

if he needs a test sled i live an hour away..

If that's the case, then how did GDE tune the stock Ecodiesel vgt turbo as a functional exhaust brake? It gives those trucks noticeable engine braking ability without overspeeding the turbo, and the OEM turbos on those engines is roughly the same size as what's on VW 2.0L engines.

I agree, but when you actually look whats going on in a VGT turbo to create back pressure ( closing off vanes ) i begin to worry that turbo overspeed will become a genuine concern.

I really wish we knew what turbo we actually had installed from the factory so i could get a turbo map from the manufacturer, given propper logging we could design a safe compromise.. I am looking at getting the Edge Insight CS2 so that i can monitor parameters more closely on the daily without the EZ Link plugged in.

I want to get a better idea of factory settings for:

Turbo exhaust back pressure in tow haul during grade shifting
Torque converter lockup (which gears and when)
Lockup line pressure vs. converter slip
Compressor shaft speed
Maximum EGT when laden, up a grade

When i get my delete installed and more data around whats going on in the engine, i will submit a ticked with PD to develop a tow tune w. VGT brake and if need be trans control adjustments.

My point is the turbo can't be smaller than what the ecodiesel runs, and that engine can be tuned to shut its turbo vanes and act as an exhaust brake without overspeeding. If it's possible for that engine/turbo, it should be possible for ours.

I agree that knowing which turbo Ford is using would be very helpful for figuring things out and finding the limits of what it can do. I find it hard to believe though that no one knows (or has been able to figure out) what turbo is put on these motors at the factory.
