ford is planning to take on the Baja 1000 with an almost 2017 F-150 Raptor with just a few nonperformance changes including a safety cage, racing seats, puncture-resistant fuel cell, full race harness and LED lighting. Greg Foutz, four time Baja 1000 winner, is going got be behind the wheel and Ford has already uploaded a trailer on YouTube.

There's a new Baja Mode inside of there which is a really cool feature. It pretty much keeps the turbos spooled up which is ideal in that environment. The only thing is hoping that the turbos can stay at a decent temperature.

Nonetheless, with the F-150 Raptor being virtually stock, that's pretty darn impressive !

Too bad performance like that, in the normal production models, would cost an arm and a leg and it's going to be a gas guzzler.

Not really, it's essentially a production F-150 Raptor and all it has is the Baja mode. Maybe it could come with a tune, but it won't cost an arm and a leg.

Ford retuned the F-150 Raptor’s Fox Racing shocks and springs so they can handle additional weight from safety gear. Think this is something owners can do themselves?

For owners it shouldn't be any different as long as someone is willing to spend the money and/or time to get it done. If it can be done on this level then why not from a tuning shop or individual. Actually often times car makers contract out builds to specific shops they trust that have history of doing such builds.

Majority of the time they get an outside shop to do it. But I don't think fuel will be affected much because of this. A lot of times when you tune, you can get more performance and more efficiency out of a vehicle.

Owners will be able to tune their own suspension, it may not be the same system but nonetheless, the same affect can be received.

The F150 Raptor got through the non-stop, 854.5-mile desert race in 35 hours, 59 minutes, 8.151 seconds. A few milliseconds more and it would have failed since it has to be completed in 36. Still amazing to think about a vehicle rolling for 16 straight hours.

Finished in third place and they still drove it home after ! That's the kicker part to this whole story and impressive to say the least for a virtually stock Raptor. First place was in a Hummer I believe.

After this race, let no one question the Raptor's reliability because I can't imagine too may vehicles lasting that long.
Well given how long they've had with the Raptor they better get it right. Plus to get as far as offering a next generation version they had to first establish the first generation as a solid product.

Now if only we can get something smaller and still potent... Ranger with it's own "Raptor" version? :grin2:

Maybe it in the future, but for now it seems to be a Pickup only badge. Ford should come out with a Raptor everything, especially SUV.
