aFe Test Fit

1139 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  FordmanF150
I recently recieved my 2021 F150 diesel back from aFe R&D facility.

They test fitted their air intake system, exhaust system, intercooler & tubes, Scorcher Pro & Blue (tuners).

Only the air intake system and exhaust worked. They had to create a new wiring harness extension for the MAF sensor since 2018-2020 used four wires and 2021 they use 3 wires.

They said the intercooler and tubes do not work due to the connections being different in 2021.

The tuners are an absolute no go until someone can unlock the computer. 2021 Ford went to a new encryption for their computers.

@FordmanF150 - I was wondering what you were alluding to in an earlier post regarding your truck being at aFe...

From this post that guessing you offered to be a new model year "guinea pig" for installing their wares on your new truck?

The OBDii protocol also changed in the 2021 model requiring new dealer IDE? tools and rendering a lot of the Chinese knock-off OBD cables useless. You can update the firmware in the OBDLink ones (which I haven't done yet) for this new protocol change.

Please keep us here on the forums informed on how you make out, as some of our threads with the highest view counts are delete/tune-related, so there are lots of members who will be interested in what you are doing.

Yes, aFe selected my truck as their "guinea pig".

Unfortunately, they will not be making mods to their 2018-2020 parts to fit the 2021 since the diesel has been discontinued. They did verify their exhaust and air intake system works (they will be doing a mod for the wiring extension for the 2021 MAF, 3 wire from 4 wire).

They did tell me that they partner with SCT with all tuners/tuning. I imagine as soon as we see tuners/tunes from SCT that aFe will be able to offer their Scorcher Pro.

aFe did confirm that if SCT is capable of unlocking the ECU then aFe will be able to provide their tunes for the 2021 3.0L Powerstroke.

Is anyone seeing any gains from the AFE intercooler and tubes? What would be the expected benefits from this purchase? I’ve been eye balling them for years?

I do know that aFe loves their dyno! For them not to post gains/dyno sheets to the intercooler & tubes would make me think no benefits. I also heard of the 3.5L Ecoboost owners not gaining anything when swapping their intercooler & tubes out, from what I was told Ford built a great intercooler setup.
aFe told me it was too bad that the ECU was locked for 2021, they said their tunes is what really woke up the 3.0L.

@Spichael1 look into aFe Scorcher Pro if you want major gains.

If SCT is capable of unlocking the ECU then aFe will be able to provide their tunes for the 2021 3.0L Powerstroke.
