Just a note of what I experienced when changing my oil and filter yesterday. Started to pull the filter out of the canister, and the filter cracked. The top of the filter seemed brittle. I think this was a Motorcraft filter.

I have never seen that before! How long was it in, and were there any overheating issues? I have seen a Mann (who makes a lot of our filters) do that but wow, that would bother me.

A year, just 5k miles. No issues.

Thinking about this a bit . . . I'm not concerned as long as the filter remains intact during its use and doesn't crack or break while in use. I'm used to oil filter media in self-contained oil filters being flexible. But, in our application, the filter media is not glued to plates on either end and would need to retain its shape during use (i.e. not get squishy or soft). Thus, an oil filter cracking / breaking (only) during removal from the canister is something I've not experienced, but probably not a problem.

I agree with @STIAJW. I’ve thought about this sort of thing and have been avoiding thinking about it. But I do have to put a lot of effort in getting my filter out. As long as it doesn’t rip along the filter fold I think you’re good.
