CEL code P05B0

Hi,

2018 3.0L FX4 Platinum F150 Diesel

I searched the diesel F150 forum for info on my current CEL code P05B0 and could not find any information on this site. A google search led me to the following link on F150 forum

From what I gathered, an active grill shutter B code is a fault in the lower grill shutter unit, that is caused by incomplete cycling of the shutters in their parameters

I took the truck to a ford dealership and got the code cleared, but it came back about 2 weeks later.

My reason for posting is that a majority of the people posting that had this code in the link provided we’re driving the 3.0 F150 diesel

Does anyone know any long term fixes for this code. I will try clearing DTCs in forscan when I get home from work today. If there are any TSB’s or other info I can gather it would help a lot. Have not heard back from the members of the other forum.

Also to note, the battery monitoring sensor on my truck has been disconnected since I brought it home, presumably to disable auto start/stop. Could this cause issues with active grill shutters?

Thanks for your help,
Jordan

Hello Jordan, welcome to the group. I was affected by this for months and posted a few times in the thread you provided so I won't repeat my journey but I can answer what you posted above. It does seem to only affect our trucks and it throws a code. In my case the shutters were just fine but off a few degrees on either the starting place or the stops. It did not affect performance and in my opinion it should not throw a code.

I can't find a way to get rid of the code in forscan. It also has nothing to do with the battery monitoring system. Other than the hillbilly fix I did I think the only repair is to replace the lower shutter unit entirely and hope the new unit doesn't have this defect. Hope this helps.

The truck cycles both the upper and lower grill shutters closed then back open every time the truck starts. If either set of grill shutters fails to fully cycle, you will get this code. It could be something is stuck in the shutters or the motor that drives them failing. Personally, I would check to see if the shutters are cycling properly and there is not something that went through the bumper opening and is preventing the shutters from cycling as they should before I would go through the cost and time of replacing the entire lower shutter assembly.
