I look at both. I’m really just wondering if the console indicator should be lit up. Mine Isn’t and can’t be seen at night. Was wondering if everyone else has a lit shift indicator on the center console ?

@apezz - mine doesn't light up either, so must be no lights under there...

I understand your question as I recently drove a rental car where each letter on the shifter was a different color and very noticeable, so not sure why Ford passed = must be cost and not mandatory.

Thanks for checking. I know it’s not a big deal but I do look down at the shifter at night but then need to look up to the dash to confirm the gear. If others on the forum said theirs were lit up I would have brought it in for warranty service. Thanks again.

why? when you put the truck into gear are you looking at the dash or the shifting lever, most people probably looking at the dash.

Because he wants to know..
I just bought my Mom a New Explorer and she is use to on the column shifting, so the first thing she asked driving at night is " Does the letters light up" ..So yes me and a few others look at it..Give the OP some kindness.
God Bless, Merry Christmas to All.

Gee I know you just didn't internet shame me in order for you to feel better about yourself.

The shift buttons on the stalk when you press the plus/minus button it will show you what gear you are in. I have the column shift lever on my F150, and while I assume it is rare I still like the old school column shift the best. You all complaining about this makes me like my column shift even more.

They removed this from the 2018 and onward.....the wire to make the LED work is there, but they just did not fit the LED strip to the underneath of the gear selector. Sure it was done to save 25 cents on a 60K truck.

Same shenanigans that Mr. Hacket is pushing hoping the buying peeps also wouldn't notice that the colored ambient light LEDs options were also removed....unfortunately dumbass....WE DID NOTICE. AND WE ARE NOT TOO PLEASED ABOUT IT EITHER

This is what happens when you have over zealous dip-****te bean counters running a car company!!!

By the way....Effin great job on the Explorer launch! NOT!

I remember years ago when they started de-contenting Grand Marquis and Crown Vics. Prices went up as features disappeared. Gone were the passenger door lock, parking wipers, medallion on the pillar outside, rear-door ash trays, full size spare and some other things I can't remember now.

I am thinking that this might be the first Ford owner experience for most of you all, I can tell you from experience. Audi and Subaru love their owners and their customers, being a Ford buyer inherits owners with certain things. Two of those things is poor customer service, and poor ownership experiences. This should be expected by owning a Ford, they need to get over themselves. Ford makes a good product but lots of little things need to be improved.

I too was confused about this at first, all the previous floor/console vehicles I have driven have the indicators beside the shifter. Took me a while to get used to it being next to the tack. wait till you accidently bump the up/down shift buttons and have the indicator go off. I had to go online to figure that one out. don't know why in the world they did that??? I would like to know if anyone has a forscan mod to keep the indicator on even if you hit the button? Just seems to me like a stupid thing to do considering that the buttons are located on the shifter handle.

Wait, so might someone find the part number for the LED strip from a <2017 truck and fit that on their 2018+? I'm not sure I'd want/care about this enough to tear my console apart if it's anyway difficult but if it's just a faceplate type of thing and the strip is cheap. I might investigate ...

For what it's worth I too noticed those lights were missing and wished it was there at night. Nothing major but, yeah, it'd be nice.
