Has anyone had their 10 speed pop out of gear and rev like it’s in neutral?

I picked up a load of vinyl planks and decided to try out tow haul mode. After taking off from a stop it went 1st, 2nd, and then popped out of gear all together and revved up like it was in neutral. I let off the gas and let it coast for a couple seconds and then when i pressed the gas again it found 3rd. I’m not gonna lie, this scared the crap out of me as i was in heavy traffic with vehicles all around me when it happened. I’m lucky the guy behind me didn’t plow into my truck the way people drive here in Austin.

Mine did it twice in the first year but not since. It does fall on it’s face some times going 3-4. Dealership says that they can’t reproduce it so they refuse to do anything about it. The 3-4 is only on the first 3-4 shift after sitting for 30 minutes or more.
Mine has been great so far and normally I would just say "take it to the dealer" but take a minute to read this complaint to NHTSA:

2 to 4 times a day since I bought the truck new, when cold, the engine RPM's flair up 600 to 1000 RPM's before slamming into gear. This happens when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear and sometimes 5th to 4th gear. I have taken it to 2 different dealers. Both said it shifted normal. When went to pick it up from the second dealer I had the Service manager ride with me. He noticed poor shifting and said the truck was NOT shifting normally. I left it for them to give it a better look. Only 3 days later I was asked to pick it up because they "couldn't duplicate the problem", even though the Service Manager witnessed the problem.
I bet you would have the same response, but it may be worth the trip.
I’d check the level of the transmission fluid. It’s not easy since there’s no dip stick. Look up the procedure in this forum. Someone had a total transmission failure and they found that the trans fluid was low. I decided to check mine and it was 1.5 quarts low. It wasn’t on that little dipstick at all. If it is low, hang on to your hat because you can’t get it a Walmart of Orielly’s.

Here is how to check your fluid level and it isn’t too hard at all. It can be done cold or hot. Check Your Transmission Fluid Level Now - It is fairly...

Checked my trans fluid at last oil change, and as most others have reported, 1 quart low. Transmission has been running a little cooler now. We used wolfs head brand that meets the spec.

#mbates6o, wow, another one. Glad you got it done. I’m going to recheck mine in a few months to see if it stays the same.

Well it’s at the dealer to figure out why my check engine light came on after the egr fiasco. I asked them to check the trans fluid since they have it. Hopefully they find that it was low and top it off and there isn’t any real problem with the trans outside of the annoying jerkiness it gets sometimes.

Mine has done this multiple times now. I really surprised that Ford is allowed to let this carry on.
I was towing my trailer the first time it happen and I jumped off the throttle and a jeep almost re ended me. He was not happy and let me know that, and this was completely not my fault.

I’m sorry to hear that! And it’s also good to know I’m not the only one. The jerky transmission everyone complains about is one thing but this is something entirely different and IMO more dangerous. Were you in tow/haul mode when it happened?

Yes I was in tow/haul when it happened. I’m not positive if it happened shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. Completely caught me off guard. Since then it has done this multiple times now. Even in normal mode not pulling my trailer. Usually does it when the trans temp is still fairly cool. I don’t know much about transmission or these 10 speeds. I know these 10’s are very complicated. I have tried a few different trans tunes and it has the same issue with all of them. Makes me wonder if it’s an issue with the valve body or other hard part. I have a friend with the same truck with close to same KM. He’s never experienced this once. Also has run the same tunes as me.

Mine did this on the highway when I was trying to pass someone. **** near red-lined and took a bit before it clunked back into gear. I thought I had blown my transmission, and I was only 37k in. Currently at 44k, hasnt happened again, but the jerky shifting is definitely there.

First, find a competent ford tech. I know they are difficult to find ! Get them to reflash/update the transmission. This completely removed the hard/ missed gear shifting problem for me .

Were you able to find a fix for this? In the last two months my truck has started doing this. When the truck is at ambient temperature it doesn’t do it as much. However, prior to that, at third gear and seventh gear it neutrals out, jumps up to 5000 RPMs, then slams back into gear. The dealership had mine for three weeks the first time and updated all of the transmission and changed the main control. I had not even gotten out of the parking lot before third gear slammed when I went to pick it up. After two more weeks, I picked it up today and it’s the same after changing the main control a second time.

@kayla I am sorry to hear you were having this problem. That is not normal and you are right to insist on a repair. Is your truck still under warranty?
