No fuel filters available for 2021 3.0 Powerstroke

Tried to buy fuel filters for the 2021 F-150 Powerstroke and Ford has the frame mounted primary filter on back order with no ETA. They told me that this years filter is not the same as the previous generations and can not be crossed. Anyone know if this is true about being different and if so, where are we suppose to get filters to take care of these expensive engines?

Interesting! Didn't know they changed the fuel filter setup on the 2021 models.

Search of parts.ford.com shows new kit number is FD4629 but interestingly the kit only contains the small metal one up front. According to the parts diagram, the filter location has moved from the firewall to up front on the engine in between the heads and comes with a mounting bracket:

Not sure what the part number for the large one near the tank is for the 2021 models = there is nothing listed in parts.ford.com for the rear filter (I assume there still is one)

Wonder why they changed the design? New location looks to be where the oil filter is on the 2018-2020 models.

@Paul Neubauer - can you post a digital pic of your engine bay? Things look a lot different in the 2021 models.

Looks like CarID has the newer FD4629 style (small one) in stock: Motorcraft® FD4629 - Fuel Filter (carid.com)

BTW - welcome to the forums!

I was able to order the secondary filter in the back of the engine and it is also different. The new filter comes with the entire bracket instead of just the filter on the previous generation like my 2019. Ford has created a mess with this!!

@Paul Neubauer - Thanks! Clear that the parts diagram on parts.ford.com is not correct...
That is a mess! I looked at one of the 2018 up filters and it looks identical, except for the bracket. The part numbers are slightly different. I held it up to your photo but I couldn't see all your numbers- they are different though.

If you do the lower filter be sure and let the pressure off the filter with the drain valve, otherwise it is near impossible to remove- if your truck has that one! Please let us know what you determine, may really help someone down the road.

Ford parts is telling me they are different. The frame mounted filter is still on the 2021 model but they say it is unavailable and a 2020 filter can not be used. The engine mounted one looks the same and has the same number on it as the one currently installed

but they said that one is also different from the previous generation.

Some random observations:

I think the diagram on the parts.ford.com website referenced above is not incorrect; it is simply showing the engine from the rear.

If you look up the frame mounted filter bracket, it appears to come with a filter:

I watched this video prior to changing my own filters and noted that Ford used to supply early filters as the complete assembly only.

I will be very surprised if there truly is a difference in the filters rather than the way they are packaged.

As an aside, if I navigate the ford parts website by my 2019 VIN, the frame mounted "bracket" comes up with the exact same P/N. And when I look up the front filter, I can either choose either the FD4629 or FD4627.

Great research. I was looking at the price that Beaker quoted and wow! I have been able to get Motorcraft filter kits off ebay from time to time for the high $60s.
Xtreme Diesel

I have ordered three times now from this website for parts for my ‘19. They have the kit of filters in stock and it says for 18-21. Hope this helps.

I called Xtreme Diesel and they said they have not been told the filters are different by Ford and that they should be the same for all model years. I picked up the secondary filter from Ford today and it comes with the entire bracket which seems pointless and probably creates a new part number so Ford can justify charging more for the same filter. I am assuming that since the filters are now sold as separate pieces, they created new part numbers to try and collect more money from each purchase. I will order the normal filter kit from Xtreme Diesel and see if anything is different.

I just checked out of curiosity and Ford has the air filters, oil filters, fuel filters and cabin filters ALL ON BACKORDER! Y'all might want to stock up to be able to perform normal routine maintenance. I might get a couple cases of oil just to be safe also during Biden's clown show.

I haven’t been able to find oil locally for quite some time now. Last winter I ordered a large quantity from OReillys, and the caps had started to unscrew on the jugs, which the delivery driver left upside down. Luckily I only lost a little bit, but it could have been quite a mess! At the same time I stocked up on all the filters from Rock auto. I can hopefully last a couple of years now with what I have in stock.

Stopped by Ford parts on the way home and they said there are zero oil filters available to purchase and that they had no oil in the quart bottles anymore. Filters would possibly be available after 7/20/22 but was thought to be unlikely with the current shortage and backlog to fill.

O'Reilly shows oil in stock and way less than the price gouging going on with other vendors.

Wow l just went to Xtreme to see inventory…oil, filters and fuel filters all gone. They had everything this morning. Never seen them have nothing….searched around some more and found a few links that said “discontinued” I hope that was a database error and not sign of things to come…

Just ordered a couple cases and filters of rockauto. Should be good until this time next year. Crazy times…. Thank you for the heads up on this @Paul Neubauer

I bought two sets of filters from Rock Auto. Part number FD 4627 is what my manual said my 21 uses. The kit has both engine and frame filters.

A while back i found this website called "Dieselfiltersonline.com" They had a good inventory at the time and free shipping with qualified orders, so I thought I would stock up being I dont have much around locally to choose from. I just checked their website after reading this thread and they still show the Motorcraft FD-4627 for 2018 and up 3.0 diesel.
Obviously this is now incorrect after reading this. I had purchased 3 of these at the time. I will have to investigate with the other part number FD-4629 at my dealer and reach out for a return from my supplier for a refund. Overall they did have great pricing at the time and is another source for anyone looking for other items if available now.
** I just checked the website for oil filters, Motorcraft oil filters are out of stock but they are offering a Mann Filter for under $6.
@Billy231, I came to the opposite conclusion. I thought this thread established the FD-4627 is the correct filter for all years. FD-4629 is simply one of the two filters if you want to buy them individually with their respective brackets for some reason.

Here is the reference from a 2021 owner's manual:

Their clause about oil filters meeting SAE/USCAR-36 opens up a whole other can of worms that may not be appropriate for a post regarding fuel filters......
