So, I have roughly 15 thousand miles on my FX4 Lariat and have had 3 oil changes so far. One at under 5 thousand miles and the rest at 5000 thousand miles as the truck breaks in the on board dash computer has calculated my oil change intervals to 7-10 thousand miles which under normal non towing everyday driving duty is the interval to use. The question is since this is full synthetic diesel motor oil formulated especially for this application, would you all follow the dash computer for change intervals or go every 5k miles to have the oil changed?



I know oil can and does last longer these days than in previous decades due to changes in formula and processes. Just want to know what others habits are.

For me, I just like the peace of mind knowing it is done every 5,000 miles. It also makes it easy to remember when I need to do it. These trucks are smart though, so I would think the computer option would also be fine. One thought that I'm a going to do at my next oil change, send it out for analysis at Blackstone, I think it is roughly $30, and they can tell you if anything abnormal is occurring and if you can extend your change interval!

I have a 2016 STI with less than 17 thousand original miles on it, I change the oil once a year since I never hit the mileage intervals. It states to change the oil every 6 months regardless of mileage but I find that synthetic oils will last a lot longer. I just think it is a waste of materials etc. to change the oil more quickly. This is not the 1960s or 1970s and modern oils just do not break down like they use to. Some manufactures even say that their oils build better protection or carbon breaking molecules a lot better with longer drain intervals than does changing the oil to new in half the normal run time. The 6.7 liter powerstroke goes 10-15 thousand mile drain intervals why not the baby power stroke which should be able to do the same.



The manual I think states 7500-10000 change intervals

What happened to just following what the computer says?

Honestly we have a gauge for air filter replacement and oil change intervals. I would follow what the digital read out states, and also since the original auto makers add moly and other additives to the original oil in the engine thus I would not change it till the recommend first change interval. These are modern computer made engines with super exact tolerances. I plan on keeping some extra DEF around and changing the oil when the computer recommends. If you have a plan then get it changed at will. A gas burner should be changed every 5 thousand miles because gas is a solvent -- diesel is oil based and thus provides more lubrication to all essential parts including fuel pump and engine internals. I would have no problem changing the oil as the truck computer told me too.

I feel the emissions on these trucks have turned the oil into a trash can holding soot. So I’m going with regular oil changes at 6000 to 7000 kilometres. 4500 miles. Ease of mind and cheap insurance. I only look at the truck minder out of curiosity.

I just had my 2nd oil change done today at my Ford dealer. I supply them the OEM filter and Rotella T6 5W-40 and the kids do all the work and I watch over and chat with them about the truck. $33 out the door for that, and saves me all the hassle of doing it myself.

On both oil changes my truck was tracking to just beyond 10K oil life. Did the first change after 8,172 miles and did the second change today at 15,658 miles (7,486 since last change) with 25% oil life remaining. I had 18x,xxx miles on my 2010 5.4 KR when I traded it in on this 2018 3.0 KR, and I always followed the truck oil life remaining % on that truck and ignored mileage, and tried to change oil before I got down to 15% oil life remaining.

My strategy on the 2018 3.0 will be to change no greater than 7,500 mile change intervals, no less than 25% oil life remaining, and potentially change sooner if I am doing a lot of towing (by a lot I mean 1,500+ miles towing since last oil change--which will be my situation on this current oil).

I put on 22K miles per year, so at 5K change intervals I would be getting a change every ~11 weeks or so, and with 7.5K change intervals ~17 weeks between changes. However, when you do the math, it is only like another ~$75-100/year to do 5K change intervals for me instead of 7.5K change intervals. I just have a hard time mentally going in for an oil change at 5K intervals when truck display shows 50%+ oil life remaining. Having said that, I know not everyone's truck is tracking to 10K change intervals, so for those folks shorter change intervals are likely warranted.

I lol at the extended idling message in the maintanence schedule, these trucks will idle for 15--30 minutes then auto start will shut it off then eventually the whole truck will die if allowed to idle too long so I'm not sure you can idle this thing for a huge long interval

In the advanced settings tab there is a place to disable the auto engine off. It's only temporary, as soon as you turn off and re-start the engine it will be back to the default of turning off after 20 minutes if sitting in park idling.

I wonder if one manually starts the truck vs remote start that the 20 minutes shut off does not apply? I was up in northern MN during the polar vortex last winter and climbed in the truck at like 6:30am at -14F, started it right up, then walked away for over 20 mins and it was still running--it never went into an auto shut-off state.

It will only shut off automatically if started with the remote, or your ford app. If you start it normally, it will run until it's out of fuel.
Dont believe this to be true as mine shut off after 20-30 minutes of idling

At 5500 miles my oil life monitor is at 43 percent I know the dealership just want the maintenance dollars for 5 thousand oil changes but this time I m going to follow the monitor to like 10-15 percent

this popped up 30 minutes exactly after I parked with the engine running. I did not use remote start or the ford app.
You can override when the message pops up or if you know you're going to want it to keep running while parked for longer than 30 minutes there is an option under advanced settings that lets you turn off the option (temporarily, as soon as you turn off the engine it will default back to the auto engine off mode).

I traded down from super duty duallys for this truck. Never had a super duty engine cut off from extended idling.
Also was able to use my inside trailer lights with the dually. On the F150 the auxillary power for your inside trailer lights and for charging your emergency brake battery only come on with the engine running and the gear selector in anything but park (which means the inside trailer light is worthless unless you run a separate hot wire to it). While I understand why it works this way on the trucks, it is inconvenient since I use my enclosed trailer more in dark conditions than light conditions.
