My first 3 oil change reminders occurred at approx 4,000 mile intervals. I'm now at about 6,000 miles since the last service and still have 20% oil life remaining. Driving habits have not changed. Is this just a result of the engine breaking in?
Chief, my understanding of the IOM (intelligent oil monitor) is that it only looks at a few factors, most notable time and mileage. I think it is also looking at trip duration, temperature and such. It has no idea of the actual condition of the oil.
Lots of highway driving (where your 3.0L engine is operating optimally) will do wonders to extend your oil change intervals. This was the consensus we arrived at in the Stuck in regen??? thread = these 3.0L are optimized for consistent highway speeds where almost all of the diesel fuel is burned resulting in minimal soot and passive regeneration is possible. It's the stop-and-go nature of city driving that fills up the DPF quicker and leads to shorter calculated oil intervals.
I track ~3500 miles between oil changes for my normal driving patterns but can extend this beyond 5000 miles with some planned road trips...
Ever since my truck went over ~40k miles it's been telling me ~10k intervals for oil changes. But it's also been getting mostly long highway trips since then as well with short errand runs thrown in every now and then, so... 🤷🏼♂️
I just changed my oil, after the service message changed from "change oil soon" to a more annoying pop up, "Change Oil Now". That was 9000 miles since the last change. Great majority highway miles, so that makes a difference in change intervals too. Now at 24,300 on my 2021.
