START HERE: New FORScan user education

We have had a few questions recently from new owners interested in learning about FORScan, and found that we have a few posts in random threads that can help, but not really a dedicated FORScan thread that new owners can reference. I did start an earlier thread on FORScan Adapter recommendations back at the end of 2018 that got corrupted and the admins could not recover, so probably the most comprehensive thread we had on choosing a FORScan adapter no longer exists.

There is a ton of information out on the FORScan website and on other F150 forums, but both are almost too much information (= think lips around a firehose)

I know that all three (3) Super Moderators here (@wreedsvt, @kdjapser and myself) have all figured out how to do FORScan programming, but all three of us also work in the IT industry and aren't afraid of a computer. I know when I initially went out to the FORScan website, the number for choices for H/W (Hardware) adapters and S/W (Software) applications was over-whelming and took me even some time to sort out what should work and what won't. I would have loved if there was a single thread that said: "Here's exactly what you need to do and is guaranteed to work..."

I also know we have some older owners who may or may not be tech-savvy, and for anyone who is not, I can understand how trying to figure out what you need is near impossible without someone explaining what combination of H/W and S/W actually works together and how to use FORScan for monitoring and/or programming once you have everything installed.

I am starting a new "sticky" thread here to hopefully demystify what you need from a H/W and S/W perspective in order to do FORScan monitoring and programming. These are my notes and documentation on what combinations are currently working for me and how to use FORScan for basic monitoring and programming.

I am going to add posts to this thread on the following topics:
  • H/W requirements
  • S/W requirements
  • FORScan Installation
  • Using FORScan for Monitoring
  • Using FORScan for Programming
  • FORscan F150 spreadsheet
My recommendations/notes can be found following the JMP tag

This is my first pass and I'm looking for some feedback on if these instructions helped or how they can be improved.

Are you sure the engine has an oil pressure sensor? I am only aware of the pressure switch near the oil filter.

I added a gauge on my 2013 F150 using a pancake style device at the oil filter. I doubt this is possible on the 3.0 diesel. I added a mechanical gauge using a tap on the pressure switch, fairly easy to do with the space available but I have never heard of any other method.

I knew the computer has a method of monitoring oil pressure (people having weird low pressure issues), but apparently it's a switch (part # JL3Z-9D290-A) not a sensor, so good went the cheap route because clearly 'nObOdY CaReS aBoUt ThAt'. Ram did the same thing with the Ecodiesel; however, Green Diesel Engineering came up with a solution that included an actual pressure sensor which worked in conjunction with their tune. Maybe if enough of us ask nicely, they'll do the same for our trucks. 🤞

FYI - anyone interested in picking up and OBDLink MX+ wireless adapter, they are marked down from $99.95 to $79.95 today as part of Amazon PrimeDay: OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner for iPhone, Android, and Windows
  • URL link is from targeted e-mail (previous purchase) so unsure if it'll work for everyone
  • Looks like all OBDLink products are marked down 20%:
    • OBDLink MX+: $99.95 marked down to $79.95
    • OBDLink LX: $59.95 marked down to $47.95
    • OBDLink EX: $49.95 marked down to $39.95
@navyR113 Yes, a cheap switch for oil pressure. In both my trucks it seems Ford has them set for 10 psi. Sure wish they would have put in a true oil sender. Way back in the Crown Vic days they did use a sender but had the dash board convert the signal to the same type of display we have, but if you wanted to you could make it work as a oil pressure sender.

Anything to save a nickel per engine, right?
FYI - anyone interested in picking up and OBDLink EX wired adapter, they are marked down 43% from $59.95 to $33.96 (lowest price I've ever seen) as part of OBDLink's Black Friday promotion: OBDLink EX

Amazon had them at the higher price so I took advantage of the link you provided and hit it. Thanks!

HI there! Got myself a 2018 F150 Power stroke (Lariat) and am fairly new to the F150 Forum. Your thread is excellent and was a tremendous help to me getting access to the programming modules and making the changes I wanted. My question is, where can one find the actual source data that has a complete description for each digit within the Module blocks/groups for my specific vehicle? I'm sure Ford service shops must have some sort of documentation related to this. Thx!
Good day. 🙂
I need your advice.
My car Ford Edge 2016. (also f150 2019:sneaky:)
I have long been thinking to replace the original car stereo, and install Android.
I do not like the original system, on youtube I found information, also a product that fits.
Found this option, the product seems good to me, wanted to check with you who have already installed it similarly.
Do you have a similar experience?
Thank you.
P. S. I am no some spammer just need some help with it because without experience, thank you for understanding))
Someone here may help you, but you would likely have better luck with a standard F-150 (not diesel-specific) forum or a Ford Edge/Taurus/Explorer forum. The diesel F-150 forum is a small subset (less than 5%) of overall F-150 owners., so you have a small pool to draw from here.
I did install an aftermarket system in my 2013 F150, I really hated the one that came with it. It seems similar to the unit you are looking at but in my case I had to install a Maestro unit to interface with the Ford proprietary controls. I don't remember the cost but it was high. Still works great with a Kenwood head unit. Sorry I am not able to help on your specific question but hopefully you can find some feedback somewhere on the 'net as beaker noted.
Hello all. Brand new owner of a 2018 F150 3.0 and couldn’t be happier. Did a lot of research before buying. (Not my 1st diesel but first diesel truck) This forum gave me confidence to make the purchase as there’s a few horror stories out there. Plus this discussion about Forscan was the top reason I did. So got the truck and bought ALL (Mac guy) the HW and SW (and got it working) tried my 1st mod. Well it’s a bit intimidating and I backed out of the different mods several times. All my “as built” parameters were slightly different than the examples. I’ve got the add on trailer braking and figured out that whomever installed it already changed a bunch of numbers/letters. Well I just did the DPF percentage mod. Success! It took awhile to figure out what changed tho. Finally got it. Good news is DPF is at 5% so must’ve done a regen on the ride home from the dealership. I might be asking some clarification questions about the other mods. In my case I’m already deep into the spreadsheet and trying to figure out why my stuff is different. Thx for all the info

Welcome CaptJ great to have you join us. Also great to have another 2018 here.

I wouldn't worry about your as builts, as long as you make a record of the as built and the changes you make. It is obviously working OK with your as builts so worst case is you can go back to that.

I was reading another forum where the poster did a Saturday night drinking forscan session and really balled things up, and of course he had no record of where he started. I think you can down load the factory as builts somewhere but you shouldn't need them. Unless you do the changes late Saturday night.

Lol. Thx I’ll try to avoid the “Saturday night” Forscan dates. Love my 2018. Ruby Red and crew cab. Lariat edition.

So I did log everything. I’m getting ready to try my next mod. What also threw me was the “titles” on the spreadsheet above each section. Some didn’t seem applicable to what I thought I was going to change. Just gonna take my time and I’ll def ask if I can’t figure it out.

This Forum is priceless if you own the diesel. I’m probably going to get the Green Diesel Upgrade soon as well.
