putting a 2-1/2 foot radio antenna on the fender?? The last 4 new vehicles we've bought new going back to somewhere around 2010 did not have them. I thought these things rode off into the sunset long ago. And the AM/FM reception was just fine.

I dislike the factory antenna. I replaced mine with this one --> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRER777/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The reason for my dislike of the factory antenna, is although as @Billjc states as using it as a sort of "height gauge", I end up snapping these OEM antennas clean off when off-road fishing in NW Ontario when I am trucking through tight spaces with tree branches almost rubbing the roof of the truck as I drive down the off-road trails to the remote lakes.

My garage has a low ceiling and with the factory antenna all my neighbors knew when I was on the move. The antenna whacking the door braces really made a racket.
I have a 6" antenna now and since I don't usually listen to over the air radio I am happy.

This was the antenna I swapped in: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BDKNQWM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I didn't want to break the flex antenna going in and out of the garage, and this one works every bit as well as the stock antenna -- maybe even a bit better actually.
