Anyone else have this recall show up today in their FordPass app?

Field Service Action Number: 18E02

FSA Title: EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION BY-PASS VALVE REPLACEMENT

Last Updated: 01/25/19

Be advised that this system tracks Recalls and Customer Satisfaction Programs for which vehicles are subject to repair in the United States. The information provided is subject to change and update. There may be temporary delays in update of information on this site due to a number of factors. For the latest information regarding the status of your vehicle or any recall program of Ford Motor Company, please contact your local dealership directly or the Customer Relationship Center.

A recall is an action by the Company to remedy a safety concern related to a vehicle defect or regulatory requirement. It may require that you return your vehicle to the dealer for service. If your vehicle is not affected, it may be because it was built at a different time or using a different part than the affected vehicles.

Anyone work for Ford that can post the dealer bulletin on this issue?

#117 ·
@Dunrollin@Regular150 - small world? Unbelievable story!
@Regular150 - I hope Ford makes your truck right, as your issue looks dangerous...

I bought my Lariat from Mullinex in New Smyrna. Only two issues, the egr recall hadn't been done (I think this was as it was evolving) and I asked them to disable the double honk. Can't be done their shop said, so I had to do it myself.

Regular, here is to hoping everything works out for you. The black platinum I saw was a beauty.

Warren the manager had us in a XLT Loaner, 1500 miles on it, the other Black Platinum is being driven from another Mullinex store and both PCM and EGR have been done. They will have it ready with spray in bedliner Thursday for us to take delivery. They have dedicated Diesel service department that it looks like you can eat off the floor! I'm sure whatever the issue is the CEL on the first one will be found and corrected with the experience they have. We'll visit parents in Englewood for two days and head back to Apopka to be United with our Road Ready Platinum! I did ask them to let me know when they diagnosed the first one so I could share on this Forum.

My dealer was the same way. Dedicated Diesel shop in the back. They really took care of my truck! I had zero spilled coolant, everything was put back into place, truck runs great. I have ran it for hours everyday since I got it back and it has not missed a beat! Love this little diesel. Seems to get stronger the more I drive!

I got the docs if anyone is interested.

Well, the top missing fuel line bracket seems unavailable. Two dealers looking for it, but to their defense, it is not in any parts breakdown. One would think it would be in same pic as the lower bracket, which I did get and installed, but it is nowhere to be found. They escalated it to Ford direct, we will see if Dearborn plant has one to spare! UGH!!!!

#127 ·
What do these brackets look like?

#129 ·
Thanks I am going to check my truck once more.

#131 ·
@wreedsvt I have a very poor clip I took before I went in the 2nd time- they had just left everything disconnected. Hope you can open and see this as it may help you locate the 2 brackets on your truck. Good luck!

I wish mine was done so kindly. My harness clip were all broken. My fuel line brackets missing, idiot dealer mechanic. Thanks for the video

#132 ·
@Dunrollin - thanks for posting your video = very helpful!

Although you can't really see what either bracket looks like in your video, you clearly showed where the brackets are located and what lines they are supposed to be supporting.
You showed where & what needs to be checked = I was able to verify that my truck was re-assembled correctly.

I relayed some of these horror stories my Service Manager and asked WTF is going on. His explanation was that techs are paid by the book hours for the job, so if the FSA says it should take 3.5 hours, they are getting paid for 3.5 hours, even if the first time performing the FSA takes them 6-7 hours (or days for some members?) to complete the job. My Service Manager gave his best Diesel mechanic some leeway on mine (being his first FSA) and he finished it under 4 hours, and was easily able to do the next three (3) in less than the 3.5 "book" hours.

Inexperienced techs are clearly taking the short cuts to finish out the job they aren't getting paid for, even if it means throwing away extra parts.
 • Is this acceptable? Clearly not
 • Is this criminal? I'd have that discussion with your Service Manager, and if you don't like his answer, visit the dealership's GM

Based on all of this, I highly recommend that all members review Dunrollin's video above to ensure that your Ford trained-and-certified techs are doing their jobs re-assembling your truck after performing FSA 18E02...

First post here. I'm taking in my truck on Friday for both 18E02 and 18N04 work. It has about 7100 miles on the clock so I'm also getting the first oil service done too.

I really appreciate all the posts here; I'll be dropping mine off at 7 AM and will not be surprised from what I read here that it might be Saturday before I see it back. I love this Lariat to death, but I hope to heaven this isn't a preview of things to come for the next few years.

but I hope to heaven this isn't a preview of things to come for the next few years.
Well it could be worse, I traded in (for other reasons) a 2019 new model year other make and it has had a least three recalls so far.
It unfortunately might be a indication of the industry overall but the advantage of having a proven (older) design is that most of the bugs have been worked out?

My check engine light came on at 2900 miles for the egr cooler, had it "fixed" at 3500 miles at Ford as the parts were back ordered and it came back on around the 4500-5000 mark had it "fixed" again with the recall this time at 6500 miles and the next day I start the truck and it is knocking so bad the entire truck is shaking. Two weeks later I am told it needs a new short block entirely and that is a month minimum out. The truck used a full tank of def in the first 4000 miles and now with 6500 miles the def tank sits just above 3/4 which seems odd also.

#137 ·
The first time it went in they didnt do the recall as it wasnt out yet and they weren't very clear about what they actually did. The second time I brought it I didnt even know about the recall until I got there and they told be about it. Know they are telling me that they dont know what happened just that my motor is "banged up". I'm definitely not impressed with how Ford is handling this, I'm paying $900 a month for a truck that will be in the shop for 2 months and now I'm running around in a pos xl EcoBoost

Here are some reference pics of mine after the recall. I think I got everything put back into place correctly.

@adamrbrg@yahoo.com I agree with @wreedsvt -- I'd be asking them for a new replacement truck and for them to transport yours back to Dearborn so they can learn from it.

#142 ·
Call Ford direct, call a lemon law lawyer. dont let them push you around.

@wreedsvt@kdjasper - nothing wrong with the rest of the truck, so replacing the engine with a short block is the standard operating procedure (SOP) for this type of failure.

Short block will require the dealership's Service Department to pull the engine and swap over all the parts (heads, fuel injection system, starter, alternator, EGR system, timing bits, etc.) from the existing engine to the short block, which I would imagine is quite an involved job, especially on a new engine installed in a truck for the first time. Given the horror stories we are hearing with missing/"extra" parts for this relatively simple (compared to a short block rebuild) FSA 18E02 recall, I would be very leery of any dealership handling this engine rebuild.

As a new owner, I would not be very happy and would emotionally feel the same way, but issues like this come down to economics, as Ford cannot afford to swap out VINs for every engine problem. They are obligated to a.) fix-the-issue/make the customer whole, and b.) ensure the customer is put in a similar (not equivalent) vehicle during their down time.

This is why I am interested in Ford's response to any engine failure due to this EGR By-pass valve manufacturing defect:
 • I was very surprised with their reaction to the missing screws for @djman's truck, but maybe they hoped that the screws got sucked out of the exhaust (no negative symptoms)
 • I am not surprised with their action plan for @adamrbrg@yahoo.com's truck, as this is exactly what I expected them to do for engine failure due to this defect

Maybe @djman can give us some history/stories on his earlier PowerStroke ownership woes, as I think with his Ford loyalty over-the-years that he has been down-this-path before...

@adamrbrg@yahoo.com - please keep us informed of Ford's handling of all of this

I need to retract what I stated in an earlier post, as I have talk to a few people and have some fairly recent news that may help anyone caught up in this situation:

This type of issue should be handled by Ford's new Low Time In Service Assembly Replacement Policy that was announced this month:
 • Effective with Repair Orders opened on or after 3/1/19
 • Vehicles within 12 months/12k miles from the warranty start date requiring an engine or transmission repair may be eligible for a replacement assembly
Translation: if your dealer determined that the engine rebuild is required due to the By-pass EGR valve "gone bad" and your vehicle is less than 12 months/12k miles old, Ford will swap your engine at no cost to you under this new policy.

@adamrbrg@yahoo.com - I would ask for your entire engine to be swapped out & replaced w/new crate engine under Ford's new Low Time In Service Assembly Replacement Policy

I do not know, I have owned several Subaru's including two STIs, Subaru of America is under a class action lawsuit for bearing/ ring land failures from several of the 12-17 STIs being modified to high HP numbers and the owners blowing their cars up. As part of the class action suit, owners such as myself receive an 8 year/ 100,000 mile warranty to any defect related to this failure as a power train extended warranty. If it was me then I would have the factory ship in a brand new 3.0 liter power stroke motor instead of a small block. If I am not mistaken these engines are specifically assembled in Ford Europe plant and then shipped here. I would want the same manufacturing process as in the OEM process.

That is just me though, they can swap the new crate motor out and then they do not have to disassemble and reassemble the motor.

I would sure push for a crate engine instead of a short block. Most dealer mechanics are not engine rebuilders like they were in the past, I would hate to have a short block on something that new.
I've had all the powerstrokes except the 6.4. I went through the stretched head bolts on the early 6.0's but the dealer fixed it with no other issues (I had 3 trucks with the 6.0's and only the first one had any problems). I had the turbo come apart on a 2011 6.7 but it was at 157,000 miles and I was running a tuner with full EGR, DEF and exhaust delete. I was hauling 40,000lbs of shingles at the time so I was way overloaded and had my foot in it. It was out of warranty so that one cost me a little over $9000 to get back on the road. I've had a few radiator problems and air conditioning issues but all were fixed quickly.
I haven't had any problems with the dealerships or Ford factory that have made me want to quit buying Ford. I think it helps if you are able to talk with your service writer or his manager to resolve the problem. If you go in making demands you probably won't get as good a result.
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Did a Ford dealer repair the deleted motor? Did they give you any grief? Looks like you are in TX too. I know they are probably way more lenient about it down here. For every 5 6.7s I see now days, 3 are deleted.

On the deleted truck I was out of warranty so I took it to Driftwood Diesel, just south of Austin. They did a great job and way cheaper than the dealer. I have friend in Ford parts who sold me the more expensive parts and I took them to the shop.

#149 ·
Dropping mine off tonight for the EGR cooler and block heater recall and a couple of other minor things. In hopes they get everything back where it belongs and my dealer does not do loaners I have the luxury of having another vehicle to drive I will tell them to take their time.

Praying for your truck.
