Mine is going in next Thursday. I’m asking to see the new replacement by pass valve when I drop it off, and I want to see the one that is removed before I sign anything. Also im taking a good few pictures under the hood and overall area of the truck they will be working around. Also going request they use new coolant out of fresh bottle rather than the coolant they catch from the truck into a dirty catch tray. Not sure they will and it’s too hard to watch over their shoulder but it’s worth asking.

I just took my unit in at about 4500 miles for the first oil change, 18E02, and 18N04.

After a couple of days (they had to order an extra gasket, I was told), they have come back and said that I was missing one of the screws on the valve in the EGR unit. They're now awaiting instructions from Ford on what to do now.

To their credit, they proactively gave me (without asking) a loaner from the very beginning. Of course, now I'm worried that the engine has to be pulled, or, at the very least, the top end disassembled.

UGH!!!!

that is terrible news. There was a pickup with 4000 miles in the shop that did mine it too had swallowed a screw. It lost compression in #4 cylinder and will likely get a new engine.

Stupid me, I did get to see the old valve, which had both screws, but did not ask to see the new valve. Parts Department said it was the new number listed on the recall, but I should have looked at the new valves screws to make sure it was indeed different.

Oh well, it is all covered under warranty, just my peace of mind suffers

I am getting paranoid now. My truck has 14K on it and was in the shop a month ago and they supposedly ordered the EGR parts. Checked in last week and they still were not in. WTF is the deal? I am supposed to go on a road trip Thursday and I don't want to drive it...

Would like to avoid a motor swap. Everything is running as it should.

When I asked them about recall, it took about a week to get my parts and they were installed in 2 days. They even did not get bolts and gaskets first day, but they were able to have them Fedex overnighted and had the truck done the next day. My dealer said it was the 3rd or 4th EGR recall they had done. It seems they had competent mechanics because mine was done correctly and everything put back like it was suppose to be.

I really think this is a dealer thing, there are some good dealer service departments and others suck. I asked a couple till I found one I was comfortable with. Dealers with "diesel truck shops" in the back are where you want to go if you can find one! Thats all those guys do all day is repair and maintain Ford Diesels.

Worst Case

Here is my truck in its current state. Apparently it ate the screws! 2018 F150 King Ranch 5800 miles...... They tore down the motor this week and verdict is need two new pistons and new cylinder head. So what should we do. Do not want the truck back did not spend what we all spent on these trucks for a refurbished shop built motor and cab that will not be the same. Any advice would be appreciated.

I smell a class action law suit.

Lemon law lawyer maybe? Have you talked to selling dealer GM? What does he say? Have you asked for a new truck?

@codywroberts@gmail.com so sorry to hear this news about your truck. For the amount of money we shelled out for these trucks I am in the camp of not accepting anything short of a brand new engine out of the crate, if not a completely brand new truck.

I know it was a short period of 2018 production that is impacted by this, but I would think Ford will lose potential new 3.0 customers if they don't take care of those impacted properly.

@codywroberts@gmail.com - Sorry to hear of your loss -- this FSA is turning into another new engine fiasco for Ford, ala the 2016 Ford Focus RS...

In terms of your question buried in your post: Use Ford's recent Low-Time-In-Service Assembly Replacement Policy (see my earlier post on 03/12/2019@2:56 PM) for a new crate engine at a minimum or check if your state's Lemon Law provides for better relief of a new vehicle. Perhaps @wreedsvt is right in that there should be a class-action lawsuit to provide consistent relief to any impacted owner, as I would not want to take on a huge corporation like Ford as a sole complainant.

Given the horror stories in this thread alone of how some dealer's don't have the experience to handle 3.5 hours of simple disassembly & reassembly for this FSA 18E02, I wouldn't let any untrained US Ford Service technician anywhere near a short block or long block rebuild on my vehicle.

What I don't understand is why this EGR By-pass valve should be any different than the one in the 3.0L "Lion" Diesel engine that Jaguar and Land Rover have been using for the past 6+ years in Europe = Ford US must have re-designed this part (for whatever reason) and didn't understand the concept of vibration...

Please keep us informed of Ford's action plan for your vehicle.

I am not sure Ford wants the 3.0 to survive. Strange to say, but efficient diesels are not promoted in USA like they are in overseas markets. Why not offer the baby diesel to general public in XL-XLT lineup, not just Fleet only? I only bought mine because the price was reduced $10K.

Looking at the EGR they took out of my truck, why in heck didn't Ford run the screws completely through the shaft and stake the screw's threads like they did for almost a century on carburetors (for same reason to prevent screws from backing out)? Like I said, seems like it was set up to fail.

Last bracket done today:grin2:! Upper fuel line bracket now installed, one month later, all complete.
Any insight as to why these get omitted by some mechanics? How much disassembly did you have to do to get it done? Great news, congratulations.

Took my truck in on Thursday after waiting for three weeks because I wouldn't leave it without a loaner. They said to have it there by 8:00 a m on Thursday. Called today (Friday) and they haven't even started on it yet so will be driving the POS loaner over the weekend. I am worried that the mechanic may not know what he is doing. Should I ask to see all of the parts they replace to be sure the screws didn't get sucked into the motor. Has me worried.

Got my truck back! Looks like they did a sanitary job of putting it back together but I am getting a anti-freeze smell. Will see if it goes away as I don't see any leaks anywhere. My screws were still in place so dodged that bullet.

I am an idiot! I am angry at myself as much as Ford. As you may remember I took my truck back due to wiring not re-connected and the fuel line being loose at both ends. It was a frustrating affair as the AC quit while they had it and it involved a few more days of this utter joke. I checked it when I got it back and it looked OK.

Today I took time to closely inspect the work. Three glaring issues remain.

First the lower front fuel line bracket is apparently broken off. It looks OK until you touch it. It consists of a black rubber bushing that attaches to another bracket on the engine.

Second the oil dipstick is just hanging there, totally unattached. That is what attracted my attention as it kind of looks OK.

Third is some device that is just hanging on, I see where it is to be attached but it is loose. I have no idea what it is or does. I will post some crappy photos and edit this to try to explain better.

1st photo: That mystery part just hanging there. It is back against the firewall and you can see the hole it should be attached to. The device is the aluminum looking thing with two screws visible on top.

2nd photo: oil dipstick. Arrow points to attaching hole.

3rd photo is almost worthless but shows the lower front fuel hose bracket area. I really wish I was able to present these issues better but it is dark and crowded down there.
